Critical gray wolf protections are under threat

Trump and his allies in Congress want to take us back to the 1800s by attacking the Endangered Species Act and allowing unbridled wolf hunting. A bill is currently moving forward in Congress that would completely remove federal protections for gray wolves. Let's make some noise on social media to prove to Congress that this is NOT what the American people want!

What is happening?

A bill moving through Congress would remove gray wolves from the endangered species list. The bill, introduced by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO 4th District), is one of the biggest threats to wolves right now and would have long-term consequences for gray wolf recovery and set a dangerous precedent for removing federal species protections.

Why is this happening?

At the end of his first term, Trump's administration issued a hasty rule to remove gray wolves from the endangered species list. Thankfully that rule was overturned by a federal judge in 2022, but now the attacks are starting again. This bill by Rep. Boebert would reinstate that same rule that was already deemed "unlawful," stripping gray wolves of federal protections and leaving it up to the states to decide how to manage this species.

What is at stake?

Gray wolves are a native keystone species. They are integral to our country's ecology and a symbol of our nation's commitment to the restoration of native wildlife. Despite their importance, many of the states where they are found would rather kill wolves than protect them. States like Idaho have passed local laws that would allow unethical and unnecessary killing of wolves if they are not protected at the federal level. In Wyoming, Brian Nesvik (Trump's nominee to run the US Fish and Wildlife Service) oversaw the mass killing of wolves by any means -- including running them over with vehicles, torture and trapping them. That is why it is so important to make sure that wolves continue to be protected under the Endangered Species Act.

What can we do?

This bill is only the first of many attacks to the Endangered Species Act. We need to make sure that our Members of Congress hear us loud and clear: endangered species protections are critical and have broad support across the country. That's why we need to post about this on social media as much as possible and tag the members of the Congressional subcommittee that will be hearing about the bill tomorrow. Will you help us spread the word?

The Sierra Club sued Trump hundreds of times in his first administration, and we're already gearing up to do it again -- with lawsuits, FOIA requests, and the power of grassroots action. At this critical moment, support from activists like you has never been more important. Our power grows from the ground up from your actions, your voice, and your support. Make a gift powering all of our efforts to stand up to this reckless administration and their Congressional allies to protect the wildlife we love, no matter what it takes.
